Everyone has to do trophy fishing. It gives you some unique accessories and armor sets, plus a good amount of SkyBlock XP.
How trophy fishing works
There are 18 trophy fish and 12 trophy frogs, each in four rarities: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond. Each one has its own requirements. The ultimate goal is to catch all of them at Diamond, but 99% of players will be perfectly fine stopping at Gold.
The most important stat is Trophy Chance, which works like magic find for trophy fish. It caps at 150, which gives a 2.5x multiplier. For example, if the Skeleton Fish has a 1% base catch rate, 150 Trophy Chance bumps it to 2.5%, and the same goes for every other trophy fish's base rate.
For Fishing Speed, just try to reach the island cap.
Odger, an NPC on the Crimson Isle, gives you a range of rewards for your trophies.
Getting started
- Trophy fishing unlocks when you enter the Crimson Isle, at Combat 22.
- Use the best lava rod you can. At a bare minimum, wait until you have a Topaz Rod (unlocked at Fishing 19), since it has more Fishing Speed.
Warning
Start before Fishing 27 if you can: that's when lava sea creatures begin spawning. Starting later is fine, but it's annoying until you unlock your first Trophy Hunter set.
Hunter Armor goals
Your first goal is 15 unique Bronze trophy fish, which unlocks Bronze Hunter Armor. This matters because the full set completely stops sea creatures from spawning.
| Armor | Requirement | Trophy Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze Hunter | 15 unique Bronze trophy fish | 5 |
| Silver Hunter | All 18 at Silver | 10 |
| Gold Hunter | All 18 at Gold | 20 |
| Diamond Hunter | All 18 at Diamond | 30 |
Each upgrade gives more Trophy Chance, which makes the next tier easier.
Gear progression
Rods
| Rod | Unlocked at | Trophy Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Topaz Rod | Fishing 19 | 0 |
| Magma Rod | Fishing 27 | 15 |
| Inferno Rod | Fishing 30 | 20 |
| Hellfire Rod | Fishing 36 | 25 |
- Prioritize the Quick Bite V and Charm VI enchants.
- Trophy Line gives 5 Trophy Chance, but it's locked behind Lotus Collection 9, which is much harder to get than most people think.
Equipment
Use the Fisherman Set: Prismarine Necklace, Tropical Cloak, Sponge Belt and Clay Bracelet. Together they give 4 Trophy Chance.
Pets
Pets are extremely important.
- Always use a Legendary Spinosaurus. It gives Fishing Speed and Trophy Chance, and makes Gold and Diamond trophy fish more likely.
- Pet item: use a Barrel of Riches, which makes Gold trophies 10% more likely. Once you're going for Diamond, switch to a Lotus Crown, which makes Diamond trophies 10% more likely.
- Kuudra pet: a level 100 Uncommon Kuudra gives 15 Trophy Chance on the Crimson Isle, even when it isn't equipped. This rarity unlocks after 100 Kuudra runs, which is much more realistic than the higher tiers. Epic and Legendary Kuudra give 20 Trophy Chance, but they aren't necessary.
Accessories
- Odger's Tooth and PhD's Grimoire each give up to 4 Trophy Chance, but both are locked behind trophy and frog fishing.
- Pearl of the Lotus gives another 2.5 Trophy Chance, but only after you complete all the Lotus Atoll chapter quests.
Attributes
- Trophy Hunter (Fire Eel Shard) gives up to 20 Trophy Chance at level 10, making it one of your strongest upgrades.
- Gold Bait (Goldfin Shard) cuts the Golden Fish cooldown by 30 seconds per level, up to 5 minutes. Golden Fish is time-gated, so this is extremely valuable. It's also the only upgrade in this guide that affects the Golden Fish.
Other Trophy Chance sources
- Hot Bait: 5 Trophy Chance whenever a specific bait isn't required.
- Trophy Chance hotspots: 5 Trophy Chance, doubled with a Hotspot Sinker.
- Umberella: extra Trophy Chance when deployed nearby.
Essence shop upgrades
- Midas Lure (Gold Essence Shop, in the Dwarven Mines) raises your chance of Gold trophy fish.
- Radiant Fisher (Diamond Essence Shop, in the Crystal Hollows) raises your chance of Diamond trophy fish.
- Chilled to the Bone (Fossil Essence Shop) helps with Skeleton Fish.
Trophy fish tips
Slugfish
Slugfish normally needs your bobber to stay out for at least 20 seconds. A level 100 Legendary Slug pet cuts that to 10 seconds. The problem is that the reel timer is randomized, so it's hard to hit 10 seconds every time.
Ember Armor fixes this. Its full set bonus turns nearby lava into obsidian:
- Wearing Ember Armor, cast your bobber onto the obsidian.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Swap back to your Hunter Armor. The obsidian turns back into lava, and your bobber can catch something now that it has met the Slugfish requirement.
This way you never catch anything too early or too late.
Warning
Avoid hotspots: Ember Armor doesn't work near them.
Obfuscated 1, 2 and 3
Obfuscated 2 uses Obfuscated 1 as bait, and Obfuscated 3 uses Obfuscated 2. That makes Diamond Obfuscated 3 especially annoying.
There's a very easy way to farm Obfuscated 1 besides Corrupted Bait: place a Totem of Corruption somewhere you can quickly fish up and kill sea creatures. Corrupted sea creatures have a chance to drop Obfuscated 1, so you can stockpile them. Once you have enough, fish for Obfuscated 2, then Obfuscated 3.
Saving bait
- Use a dedicated rod with the Fisherman attribute, Caster VI and a Stingy Sinker.
- The Spiked Atrocity accessory also helps preserve bait, but it's a little expensive.
This matters most when fishing for Obfuscated 3, since every Obfuscated 2 you save counts. Fish in the spot to the right of the Dojo: it has the fewest trophy fish types, so you don't waste bait.
Dojo fish
Fish on the right side of the Dojo. That spot lets you use your Umberella in the corner.
Progressing efficiently
- If you can't afford it, don't waste money on expensive upgrades early on. Improve your setup gradually as you work toward Silver, then invest more heavily in Trophy Chance and rarity bonuses once you're going for Gold.
- Gold Hunter Armor is a good stopping point if you're not interested in Diamond. If you are going for Diamond, max out everything, because you'll likely need to hit pity on at least a few fish.
- At the start, fish in spots where you qualify for several missing trophies at once.
- Work on the Golden Fish alongside your other trophies rather than leaving it until the end.
Trophy frog tips
Don't touch trophy frogs until you have at least Gold Hunter Armor. Apart from SkyBlock XP, they don't really give you much.
Most trophy frogs are super easy, and you can usually go for most of them at the same time.
- Pet: use a Mythic Frog pet. The Spinosaurus only works for trophy fish.
- Tree Frog: you don't need to be on a tree, just on a leaf. A leaf up on top of an island works; the video shows the spot.
- Diamond Froggles and Red Sweater: both are a little expensive, but you can buy them and use them straight away instead of waiting to unlock them. For a while you'll run 2/4 Trophy Hunter with Diamond Froggles and a Red Sweater.
- Exploding Frog: you don't need to contribute to the exploding lilypad. Just stand near it when it explodes to get credit.
- Combining lilypads: use a bow. It's much faster.
- Attributes: you'll need Flip Flopper and the Seashine Shard.
All the other frogs are simple. For reference, getting every frog to Gold took Asxent only 4 hours.
